Mother Gabriel Dillon, born in Dublin, Ireland, the first Superior of the Houston foundation, was an indefatigable member of the Congregation. She built the Motherhouse in Crawford Street and later added two wings. Within a 15-year period, she purchased property and built, with borrowed funds, schools in St. Joseph, St. Nicholas, and St. Patrick's parishes. These schools were eventually purchased and operated by the parishes while the Sisters continued to teach in them. Mother Gabriel undertook this great responsibility while holding the offices of Superior, Treasurer, and Mistress of Novices. However, the heavy load took its toll, for she died in 1895 at the early age of 45 years.
