The TV channel “Spas” will show four films from the series “Church in history”

    

From 20 to 23 August 2018 on TV channel “Spas” will be showing four films of the 10-part documentary series “the Church in history,” according to the website of the Fund Gregory the theologian. Author and presenter — Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev). Director — Maria Guseva.

Films will be shown from Monday to Thursday; starting at 23:15, repeat at 02:30 and 11:00 the next day.

Cycle filmed by the Studio “neophyte” by order of the Charity Foundation named after Saint Gregory the theologian, with the financial support of the Federal Agency for press and mass communications.

August 20. “Fall Of Byzantium”.

Metropolitan Hilarion will speak about the Byzantine period of the history of the X-XV centuries It was a time of severe trials caused by the Crusades and conquests of the Seljuk Turks.

While the Church continued to live intense liturgical, theological, ascetic life. One of the main spiritual centres of the Byzantine Empire was Athos. The audience will learn about the theological disputes that erupted in the fourteenth century around the monks-Hesychasts and St. Gregory Palama, spoke in defense of the sacred-silent.

The film also explores the history of the Christian West.

    

21 Aug. “Orthodoxy in Russia”.

The film is dedicated to the history of Orthodoxy in Russia since the XIV to XVII century. The author of the paintings remind the viewers the role in confronting the Golden Horde played by three outstanding contemporary: the Saint Alexy of Moscow, St. Sergius of Radonezh and the Holy Prince Dmitry Donskoy.

Metropolitan Hilarion tells about the beginning of the autocephaly of the Russian Church, about the disputes that arose in the XVI century between the “possessors” and “non-possessors” – the supporters and opponents of the monastic land tenure, relationship between temporal and spiritual power in the person of Ivan the terrible and Metropolitan Philip of Moscow, Maxim the Greek translator, regarding the establishment of the Patriarchate in Russia, the significance of the exploit of the Holy Martyr Hermogen, to overcome the Turmoil, about the book right under Patriarch Nikon and the Church schism.

    

August 22. “Synodal period”.

The film tells how Peter the great abolished the Patriarchate. The reforms, continued by his successors, resulted in the secularization of Church lands, hit the monasteries and monasticism. At the same time supporting the development of spiritual education. In the tape analyzes the achievements and paradoxes of the bicentennial of the Synodal period, which ended with the restoration of the Patriarchate in 1917.

    

August 23. “The persecution of the Church in Russia XX century”.

The coming to power of the Bolsheviks in October 1917 marked the beginning of an unprecedented persecution of the Russian Orthodox Church, with the result that by 1939, throughout the country there were only about a hundred temples, there was no monastery, no Church schools; freedom were only four ruling bishops.

The situation changed with the beginning of the great Patriotic war. However, persecution resumed in 1958 on the initiative of Nikita Khrushchev, and – with various levels of intensity, continued until the beginning of “perestroika” in the mid 1980-ies.

A decisive change in the position of the Russian Church in society marked the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Russia (1988). The period beginning with that time and continuing to this day, often called the “second Baptism of Rus'”: millions of people throughout the former Soviet Union came to the Orthodox faith.
