Petro Poroshenko said that the Ukrainian Church had Autocephalous status of the Local, and now, after 300 years, there is a process to reinstate it.

The head of state said that restores 300 years Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, because it is one of the main attributes of an independent state. He stated this in the broadcast channel, “W1”, the press service of the President of Ukraine.

“Six months ago, nobody believed we were in such a short time approach the Tomos so close. Ukraine returns to its Mother Church – the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople,” – said Petro Poroshenko.

He added: “We don’t turn one of the Churches in the Ukrainian Autocephalous. We create, or rather restored after 300 years the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, because it is one of the main attributes of an independent state,” and explained that it fully complies with the Orthodox canons.

Orthodox Church on the territory of modern Ukraine was formed in 988 as a result of the baptism of Rus by Prince Vladimir for a long time and was part of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, called the Kiev Metropolitanate. Gradually, due to historical circumstances, the chair of the Metropolitan of Kiev was moved to the city of Vladimir, and later to the new capital – Moscow. In 1448 the Church in Moscow became isolated from the Uniate at the time of Constantinople and later became the Moscow Patriarchate.

In 1458 the Patriarchate of Constantinople formed a new Metropolitan of Kiev center in Kiev. She also was a part of the Universal Church. In 1686 year, the Kiev Metropolitanate was transferred Panaram Moscow and joined the Moscow Patriarchate.

Thus, the Kiev Metropolitanate was never among the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches.

Since 1990, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is fully Autonomous within the Russian Orthodox Church.
