Many countries celebrate one of the main Christian holidays — Christmas. Ten interesting facts about this amazing holiday said Ruslan Thomas, youth pastor of the Church of the “Joy” in Almaty.
10 the FACT. DATING
Who knew that today we live in 2018 from the birth of Christ? Our annual calculation will always go by for the birth of Jesus — and Yes, our era started from this date.
9 FACT. THE LACK OF CELEBRATION IN THE BIBLE
This is not a biblical holiday — the first Church did not celebrate Christmas, then it was just a fact. People started to celebrate it only in the 3rd century, as a reminder of Who was then born.
8 FACT. THE LACK OF A PRECISE DATE
December 25 or January 7?
In fact, no one knows the exact date of Jesus ‘ birth. Some scholars even suggest that it was in the spring (because the shepherds who were there in the winter rest). But that’s not the date, silly to say, when the right to celebrate Christmas, and when not, the fact remains, and to celebrate it all year round.
7 FACT. TREES AND APPLES
Why the tree is associated with Christmas? In the 15th century the Germans came up with the idea of decorating Christmas trees with apples, that though as-that to brighten up the dullness of winter. It was the only tree that stays green all year round. Then people began to decorate Christmas cakes, candles and only in the 20th century began to decorate as we now know it. By the way, a garland, which we decorate the Christmas tree now is a consequence of those lights (from which the tree was burning). This is where it all began and do not believe those who say that it has something to do with the spirits or they say Jesus was born near the Christmas tree and so we are putting them.
6 FACT. THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE
December 24, 1914, without any formal order, about 100 thousand German and British soldiers unofficially ceased hostilities in honor of Christmas. This happened from the fact that someone started celebrating the holiday, seeing in it the hope. In the end, the soldiers stopped the war and made up without telling anyone. Everyone began to sing, jump and dance. Of course, all flew from military commanders, but the fact remains.
5 the FACT. CANDY CANE (JESUS CANDY)
If you ever see this candy, you should know that their form is no other than the letter J (“Jay”). This staff and the first letter of the name of Jesus, and her colors not just red and white. White is the light that Jesus brought into the world, and red the blood shed on the cross.
4 the FACT. CHRISTMAS SUBSTITUTION
If you were born in the post-Soviet era, you know that the New year we have ahead of Christmas. But not all know that all we have in the new year holiday — all we have is from Christmas.
In Soviet Union people pumped atheism and Christmas as a holiday was smoothly covered. But not to take away from people the atmosphere of Christmas Packed New year. In 1991, when the collapse of the Soviet Union — the people were again able to openly celebrate Christmas. In all this we can conclude: there was a strong substitution of concepts. And Christmas and New year — the good, the bad only when we are mistaken or confused in everything.
3 the FACT. THE CULTURE OF GIVING GIFTS
Never people did not give gifts to each other. Before Jesus was born, people were market relations, trade: “You are me and I you.” In Matthew 2:10-11 it is written about the first gifts “when they Saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy, and entered the house, they saw the young child with Mary, His Mother, and bowed down and worshipped Him; and opening their treasures, offered Him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh”. The culture of giving gifts was born just then.
2 the FACT. PROPHECIES ABOUT THE BIRTH OF JESUS
In the old Testament 600 years BC, the prophet Isaiah wrote: “After the child is born, to us a Son is given to us! On His shoulders will have the power and It shall be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince, peace-giving”.
Substitute death may only choose a date when you will kill the man — but how to take and adjust the birth?
600 years before the birth of Christ, Isaiah spoke about this and it’s only 1 verse, while the whole old Testament is full of prophecies of different people about it. The fact that was supposed to be born someone Who will give people hope and salvation and will be the most famous person of all time. We read it now and realize that something went wrong from year to year has varied history, rebuilt the culture, and just now, for many people Jesus is a Russian God.
Everything changes, but Jesus remains the most famous person, and the Bible the most popular book. But unfortunately, in spite of the popularity, not everyone knows who He is.
Having a history and irrefutable facts, our faith is built on genuine understanding and critical thinking. To sincerely understand and to be convinced in what you believe — that is power. We encourage you to understand what you believe, what you are doing and know how “grow legs”. Everything we do is only a consequence of who we are. Not Vice versa. In all this there is a deeper meaning, because Jesus lives inside.
FACT 1. JESUS WAS BORN SO HE COULD BE BORN EACH
God everything happens for a reason and the purpose of the birth of Christ was one, He wasn’t born just so we celebrated Christmas, it is not for history and religion, — He was born so that every person could be born again!
When the shepherds saw the star and its light, they saw hope. And today the person of Jesus is the strongest hope, which is in every human being. Only His personality can liberate our lives, and not from external, but internal. And in all this Christmas batch (culture, Christmas trees, presents, who is right and who is not) people forget about the most important. God everything had a purpose, cause and effect, and all we have now — as a result so we could be born again.
The Christmas holiday is a reminder of how important you are to God. And after 2000 years He still wants to bring into your life love, joy and peace. Jesus came to become closer to you.
The best thing you can do right now in the Christmas is to sincerely thank Him for everything.
