Ancient icons of Pomerania will be presented at the exhibition in the Vologda region

Forty works of carved plastics from the collection of the Museum Association “Art culture of Russian North” will be presented at the exhibition “the Beauty of a carved image” in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-reserve, reports the press service of the Ministry of culture of the Arkhangelsk region.

    

The exhibition will be exhibited more than five hundred objects from museums of Vologda, Kirillov, Arkhangelsk, Kargopol, Veliky Ustyug, as well as from many private collections of our country.

The exhibition will present carved icons, tabernacles, crosses, Holy gates, the details of the iconostasis of the XVI – early XX centuries. State Museum Association “Art culture of Russian North” has a large collection of carved wooden sculptures related to the Christian culture. In the 1990-ies the Museum was shown at the State Tretyakov gallery in Moscow, a major exhibition “Carved icon-stands and wooden sculpture of the Russian North”, which exhibited over 200 works.

The most ancient stone icon, which will be presented by the Museum on the exhibition in the Kirillov – “St. George and the dragon” of the SIXTEENTH century from the ancient village Kevrola on Pinega. A decent place will be unique carved wooden images of St. Nicholas the end of the SEVENTEENTH century, originating from Northern temples, in ancient times, standing on Onega and Mezen.

For the first time will be exhibited a carved figure of St. John the Evangelist of the NINETEENTH century, donated to the Museum, and also held long-term restoration, the altar cross of the EIGHTEENTH century.

Carved icons and carvings of the iconostasis reflect the creativity of artists of different segments of the population of the Russian North, living in the Northern cities and monasteries. Unique carved icons are created by the believers of Pomerania and the Kargopol area.

The opening of the exhibition dedicated a scientific conference on the theme: “the Beauty of the carved image.” The conference will bring together the best experts in the field of ancient art, representatives of research institutes, conservators, collectors.

The organizer of the exhibition and conference is the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-reserve supported by the Ministry of culture of the Russian Federation.

Exhibition in the people’s house of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-reserve will be held from 29 June to 15 August.
