We are all responsible for the preservation of the unity of Orthodox Christian Nations, said the head of the Duma Committee on civil society development issues, public and religious organisations Sergey Gavrilov at the meeting with Patriarch Bartholomew I and the members of the Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, according to “Parlamentskaya Gazeta”.

“We are all responsible for the preservation of the unity of Orthodox Christian Nations and civilization based on the gospel Ministry, mercy, compassion. Inter-parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy needs to be a bridge between countries and parliaments, as an example of overcoming sanctions and restrictions,” he said.

Gavrilov noted that the IAP is struggling with inequality, poverty, oppression of Christians in the middle East. In the summer the Assembly also adopted the Declaration against schisms, persecutions of the Churches on their canonical territories, in connection with the aggravation of the situation in Ukraine. “However, our efforts are threatened Church schism, which was initiated not by us but by the secular authorities of Ukraine that are not Orthodox believers,” — the statement of the Deputy’s press service.

According to the head of the Duma Committee, the danger occurs when faith is subordinated to the national extremism when extremists use religious slogans. “All this leads to fragmentation, civil strife, limitation of the rights of man, moral and physical humiliation of the true Orthodox people, the crisis of relations between the Orthodox countries, the growth of mistrust, the decline in prestige of Christianity in the world overall, the growth of totalitarian pseudo-Christian movements,” he said.

Gavrilov called the Patriarchate of Constantinople to wisdom and sanity and noted the need to avoid “intervention of forces alien to Orthodoxy in an Orthodox family, imbued with the spirit of love and peace”.
