Only a third of Ukrainians approve of the idea of establishing a Local Church – poll


A nationwide survey was conducted from 19 to 25 may 2018

More than half of Ukrainians believe that the creation of a Local Church is not a matter of power, and only a third approve of this initiative, shows a sociological survey.

About 31 % of Ukrainians voted for the establishment of a Local Autocephalous Orthodox Church, 20 % against. Such data are published by the Fund “Democratic initiatives” name Ilka Kucheriva and sociological service of the Razumkov Center, reports State.

The study showed, the rest of the population is either indifferent (35 %) or they don’t have a definite answer (14 %).

Most support the idea has received in the Western (58 %) and Central (35 %) regions.

Do not support the creation of Autocephalous Churches in the South (24% against 9 %), East (respectively, 28% and 10 %) and in Donbas (28 % and 18.5 %).

In addition, 56.7% of respondents said that the government should not interfere in the establishment of the Local Church. Only 7% think otherwise. And 17.1 percent believe that the authorities can make efforts in this direction, but only as a self-help efforts of the Orthodox Church.

A nationwide survey was conducted from 19 to 25 may 2018 in all regions of Ukraine except Crimea and uncontrolled territories of Donetsk and Lugansk regions. The sample of 2019 respondents aged over 18 years old. Theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.3 %.

Funding survey carried out in the framework of the project “Program to promote social activity “register!””, funded by the U.S. Agency for international development (USAID).

In mid-April, Poroshenko appealed to the Constantinople Patriarch Bartholomew to grant the Tomos of autocephaly of the Church in Ukraine and announced the creation of a Single Local Church. The Verkhovna Rada supported the President. In the Kyiv Patriarchate has already declared that they see on the head ETC its leader, Filaret, a devotee of the canonical Church anathema.
