Patriarch Irinej of Serbia and Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople
Stressing the fact that Constantinople is the Mother Church of Kiev, Moscow, etc., Patriarch Irinej at the same time does not believe that it gives any exclusive rights.
The status of “the Mother Church” gives rights to individual decisions. This was stated by the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the 15-page letter to Patriarch Bartholomew, reports Romfea Greek Agency.
As reported by Romfea, the reason for writing the letter was the concern of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Patriarch of the unity of the Orthodox Church, following the intervention of the hierarchs of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, concerning the granting of the Tomos of autocephaly of the Ukrainian separatist organisations.
Patriarch Irinej reminded that the Church in Crete confirmed the existence of the fourteen Autocephalous Churches in their present canonical limits. This statement of the Cathedral on Crete confirmed that the Autonomous Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate.
“Honor and dignity “of the Church’s motherhood” does not provide that the Mother Church the right to ignore or, worse, to question historically educated autocephaly and jurisdiction”, – said the Primate of the Serbian Church.
It follows that the Ecumenical Patriarchate can not decide alone the future of the Ohrid Archdiocese and the Holy Kyivan Metropolitanate. The Patriarch’s letter emphasizes that the process of finding and proclamation of the new autocephaly has been agreed the local Orthodox Churches.
Also in the letter of Patriarch Irinej said that Ukrainian politicians use the topic of autocephaly for their own benefit.
