Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria met with President of the inter-parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy Sergey Gavrilov

    

In Cairo, a meeting of the Chairman of the Duma Committee on civil society development issues, public and religious associations, President of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy (IAO) Sergey Gavrilov with his Beatitude Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa Theodoros II.

The meeting was also attended by first Deputy Chairman of the Duma Committee on Affairs of Commonwealth of Independent States, Eurasian integration and relations with compatriots Konstantin Zatulin, the first Deputy Chairman of state Duma Committee on civil society development issues, public and religious associations Ivan Sukharev.

During the meeting, the Deputy Sergei Gavrilov stressed the multinational character of the flock of the Patriarch of Alexandria.

“The Russian Orthodox and Alexandria Orthodox Churches have much in common – the parishioners represent different nationalities and ethnic groups. In the parishes under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, speak more than 200 languages, but the Alexandrian Orthodox Church as a single, despite the fact that also facing the danger of division and extremism,” – said Sergey Gavrilov.

The MP said the “special observance of canonical strictness to the faith” of the Alexandrian Patriarch, his significant contributions to the field of child care, charitable activities and missionary work. As explained by Sergey Gavrilov, “the ancient Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa on his long journey, covering more than 2,000 years, provided the presence of Orthodox Christianity on the African continent, where today is quite a difficult situation: civil war, epidemics, poverty, disease, hunger.”

The participants of the meeting highly appreciated the activities of the Patriarchate of Alexandria in the careful preservation of Orthodox values and traditions, the formation of a culture of peaceful coexistence and tolerance, respect and mutual assistance between people.

The state Duma also visited the Church of St. Nicholas, where he venerated the relics of Holy Apostle Matthew.
